Today’s Question:
What do you think about this quote? Do you believe this to be true? If so, why and how? And, if not, why not?
“What counts, in the long run, is not what you read; it is what you sift through in your own mind; it is the ideas and impressions that are aroused in you by your reading.”
(pg. 7-8, “You Learn By Living” by Eleanor Roosevelt)
My Answer:
I love this quote and believe it to be true, at least for me.  No matter what genre I am reading, even the mysteries that I usually read 80% of the time, can trigger personal memories.  I read for pleasure but I also read to fuel my imagination.  When I am reading a really good book and can be, what I call, “transported” into the plot, it is like I am seeing a movie in my mind.  The dialogue, traits, emotions and actions of the characters also can be thought provoking for me as to what I would do in the situation.  And if it is powerful, the impression stays with me for a very long time.  For example, I read The Diary of Anne Frank when I was in elementary school, which was eons ago, but to this day, I can recall the images that I took away from the book.  So my answer to today’s question is, I definitely agree with the above quote.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia of The Printed Page and is now on tour.
According to Marcia, “Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.”

“Meet Me On Monday!”   Hosted by Java from Never Growing Old

Blogging is a funny thing…we tell our most intimate thoughts for all to read and yet most of the time I find myself sitting and wondering, “who is this person!?” I know them…but yet I don’t know them! I want to know who the person is behind all those words so I thought of a great way for all of us to “meet” each other!
“Its a great way to to meet new friends and for others to get to know me better….one Monday at a time!!!”….as quoted by the Chacogirl!!

  1. Wow! That's a lot!
Yes, I agree that it's how the book impacts you not which books you read. That's always what it comes down to, isn't it?
Your mailbox books look like tons of fun! I'm absolutely envious!!
It's always nice to talk to your mom, isn't is?

  2. Oh, my gosh! "The Diary of Anne Frank" DID transport me as a little girl – I think it might be an even greater re-read now that I'm "older" and can read it with life experience. It was also the play that caused me to fall in love with community theater. I do believe that the books you read should take you places and cause you to imagine and think and feel – otherwise, where's the pleasure in reading?
WTG on the win! The False Friend is on my wishlist AND James Patterson has been PROLIFIC this year! I guess that's what happens when you write different genres; you must produce for each genre fan! Enjoy the reads!

  3. We have a couple of the same books on our stacks. I talk to my mom often too even though we are thousands of miles away. Thank goodness for cell phones!

  4. Hi Cheryl,
I love that quote. The first time I have seen it.
I prefer, on the whole, not to watch the film version of a novel. I want to keep my own movie version of it in my mind like you.

I won't Christmas shop until December is here.

    enjoy ur week

  5. I have The False Friend on my wish list. I'll be sure to watch for your review. The Diary of Anne Frank is one of those books that stays with you forever. I bought a new copy so I can reread it someday.

  6. I like that quote, great one.

I really should read more JamesP, I enjoy him but never read much, only 1 last year and 1 this year.

I like some sushi but don't consider myself a try foods person. I prefer the cooked sushi ones.

I have ideas in my mind for Christmas but haven't officially started, only 1 present, that is hardly started, lol

  7. Stopping by from Meet Me On Monday. Love Fox News too. I only get to watch it in the AM though. I love James Patterson. I look forward to checking out a review. 🙂

    Have a great day!

  8. I LOVE SUSHI! ALL TYPES OF SUSHI! Note caps to say SUSHI! YUMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYY ;P

Nice stash of book again Madame Cmash 😉

let me know how The False Friend turns out…

Yours truly a GOOD FRIEND 🙂

  9. as to the MM question…I am not sure I totally agree with the quote at least to the degree that I do think it matters what we read. I think we have to push ourselves a bit out of our cozy comfort zone of reading sometimes.
