SOMETHING TO PROVE
A Daughter’s Journey to Fulfill a Father’s Legacy

by YVONNE S. THORNTON, M.D., MPH
with Anita Bartholomew
January 8th to January 22nd
SYNOPSIS (borrowed from B&N):
The inspiring sequel to the acclaimed memoir The Ditchdigger’s Daughters.

Dr. Yvonne Thornton’s memoir The Ditchdigger’s Daughters has captured the hearts of readers everywhere since it was first published in 1995. Translated into 19 languages, featured on Oprah, and made into a TV movie, this heart-warming and inspiring story chronicles Yvonne Thornton’s family; at its center is her beloved, unschooled but wise father Donald Thornton, who demanded that all five of his daughters not only excel in school, but go on to become doctors. Four of them did; the other found her calling in law and became a lawyer instead.
Something to Prove picks up where The Ditchdigger’s Daughters left off. In this sequel, Dr. Thornton reveals how she ascended to the top of her field as a physician by drawing on her father’s teachings. Despite bias and setbacks, she became the first African-American woman to be board certified in the obstetrical sub-specialty of maternal-fetal medicine. Dismissed and shunned by her peers for entering the white, male-dominated world of academic medicine, Dr. Thornton relied on her father’s life lessons, which taught her to be strong and rise above adversity. Though intelligence, determination, and hard work, Dr. Yvonne Thornton overcame the odds to reach the pinnacle of her profession.

  2. That's funny! I've NEVER thought about it. Hubby keeps suggesting it especially as the job market around here keeps lowering but I really like working in the engineering field (no I'm not an engineer I just 'get' those types). Too much gross stuff in the med field – I'd much rather be measuring grease traps & sewage manholes… LOL!

  3. Yes, I have. Too late now, I am retired. My father was a family doctor and I used to go on house calls with him. One of my favorite toys was a human skeleton! We were very poor when he was in med school. Back then, is wasn't a real option so when I thought of being a nurse, my father discouraged me. He didn't want me to take blood samples etc. I regret not going against the tide, I have loved medicine all my life. When I was out of high school, I worked as his receptionist for several years before going onto college. I love watching House and often I can guess the diagnosis before House does! I think if I had gone into medicine, the speciality that I would have chosen would have been the one that my father wanted, to be a diagnostician. We didn't have the money for him to back to college to get the speciality education but I know that he would have done well. Sometimes, he would have a difficult case and he sent his patient to Mayo Clinic for confirmation of the diagnosis. They always agreed, he never missed. I am very glad that Dr. Thornton bucked people's prejudices and became a great doctor. She is an American to be very proud of.

  5. I thought about going into the medical field when I was a teenager watching medical series on TV; again when I joined the Air Force for a career field; and most recently after my last job when I aced my CNA and was going to test for nursing 🙂 *Thanks* for the giveaway!

  6. No, I have not thought about going into the medical field. Although, I'm still considering going after my doctorate. Will focus for the moment on paying off my student loans.
