SO FAR AWAY
by MEG MITCHELL MOORE

SYNOPSIS:
Thirteen-year-old Natalie Gallagher is trying to escape: from her parents’ ugly divorce, and from the vicious cyber-bullying of her former best friend. Adrift, confused, she is a girl trying to find her way in a world that seems to either neglect or despise her. Her salvation arrives in an unlikely form: Bridget O’Connell, an Irish maid working for a wealthy Boston family. The catch? Bridget lives only in the pages of a dusty old 1920s diary Natalie unearthed in her mother’s basement. But the life she describes is as troubling – and mysterious – as the one Natalie is trying to navigate herself, almost a century later.
I am writing this down because this is my story. There were only ever two people who knew my secret, and both are gone before me.
Who was Bridget, and what became of her?
Natalie escapes into the diary, eager to unlock its secrets, and reluctantly accepts the help of library archivist Kathleen Lynch, a widow with her own painful secret: she’s estranged from her only daughter. Kathleen sees in Natalie traces of the daughter she has lost, and in Bridget, another spirited young woman at risk.
What could an Irish immigrant domestic servant from the 1920s teach them both? As the troubles of a very modern world close in around them, and Natalie’s torments at school escalate, the faded pages of Bridget’s journal unite the lonely girl and the unhappy widow – and might even change their lives forever.

  1. Absolutely, there should be consequences for this kind of bullying.
Perhaps, unable to post anything in the future unless it is approved by someone should be the consequences.

  2. Yes, there should be consequences. It is difficult to do but they should not be able to use computers for a designated time period. And, depending on what transpired because of the cyber-bullying, possibly jail time. Maybe I am just getting old but I do believe people need to be held accountable for their actions.

  3. Rather than punishing them, I believe there are reasons for people to be cyberbullies. Perhaps real-life problems, so I think there should be social workers to help cyberbullies.

  4. I do think that there should be I think there should be help for the bully as well

  5. Yes, there should be consequences like being banned from the computer by the parents.

  6. I think there should be for any kind of bullying but to be honest how can one regulate it on line?

  7. Yes, bullying is bullying. I’m not sure what the consquences should be. The people doing the bullying need help. They are sick and don’t even know it.

  8. I think there should absolutely be consequences for cyberbulloes. Maybe no computer privalges until the issues have been dealt with properly.

  9. Yes, there should be consequences for cyber bullying. I think that the person who is doing the bullying should have to face the person that he/she has been bullying and explain to that person why they have been bullying the person, as well as perhaps see a counsellor to find out the reason for the bullying.

  10. Of course. Possibly restricted use of the internet would work to correct that but there are so many different ways to access the internet these days that it would probably be difficult to restrict it.

  11. I definitely think there should be consequences for cyber bullying. I’m not sure what would be appropriate, but something would need to be done.

  12. There are consequences for making threats against another student and I think cyber bullying should be considered the same thing.

  13. Yes I think there should be consequences from the parents (loss of electronics) and from the school (suspension, detention, etc)

  14. Yes, there should be consequences. First an apology is in order. The punishment would depend on the age and their understanding of what they did. Losing computer time would be part of the punishment.

  15. Yes, they should be banned from the internet for life and put in jail for a few days

  16. Yes, for sure. Bullying is such a problem because people feel a bit fearless behind a computer and tend to say more horrible things than they would in person. If parents were more involved or more concerned, they would ban the individual from the computer for a number of months and community service would be doled out..hopefully in a capacity that makes them realize that bullying, no matter the form, is hurtful. Maybe a little ‘taste your own medicine’ exercise or two…

  17. There absolutely should be. People are a lot more brash when there is no face to put with the words. As to what should be done, have no idea

  18. absolutely, I think anyone caught cyber-bullying should either do community service or jail time

  19. Yes, the person should be charged with harrassment! People think they are invisible online and can lash out as they see fit. It is ridiculous!

  20. Yes there should be followup to any bullying!! The diary sounds like a great new method of writing about this policy!!

  21. There should be serious consequences for any kind of bullying — serious consequences like suspension, expulsion, or police involvement.

  22. Yes! It should be treated the same as bullying. I don’t know what type of punishment there should be though.
