THEFT BY CHOCOLATE
by LUBA LESYCHYN

SYNOPSIS:
Mystery, Mayans and Mayhem: looking for chocolate, love and an international art thief in all the wrong places.
Chocolate addict Kalena Boyko wasn’t prepared for this. Heading to work at Canada’s largest museum as an administrator, she hoped for quiet and uninterrupted access to her secret chocolate stash. Instead she’s assigned to manage the high-profile Treasures of the Maya exhibition with her loathed former boss Richard Pritchard.
With no warning, her life is turned inside out and propelled into warp speed as she stumbles across an insider plot that could jeopardize the exhibit and the reputation of the museum.
After hearing about a recent botched theft at the museum and an unsolved jewel heist in the past from security guard and amateur sleuth Marco Zeffirelli, Kalena becomes suspicious of Richard and is convinced he’s planning to sabotage the Treasures of the Maya exhibition. Her suspicions, and the appearance of the mysterious but charming Geoffrey Ogden from the London office, don’t help her concentration. The Treasures of the Maya seem cursed as problem after problem arises, including the disappearance of a key artifact – the world’s oldest piece of chocolate…

  1. I am not a chocoholic. I am highly sensitive to chocolate and can only eat very small amounts on occasion or I will break out in hives. I like See’s dark cherries but can only eat one at a time. And, maybe only one a day at most. Can you imagine?

    1. I’ve had a variety of food sensitivities myself for most of my adult life. Chocolate is not one of them, but gluten is, so I have to carefully monitor my intake of food items like pasta, bread, pastries, etc. But the great thing about “Theft By Chocolate” is that you don’t have to be a chocoholic to enjoy the book. It’s a page-turning museum mystery infused with lots of humor and sassy dialogue. There’s a little bit of everything for all kinds of readers.

    1. The great thing about chocolate is that it is accessible to everyone. Even if your budget is limited, there are some terrific commercial brands of chocolate with great flavor and texture. And if you have a bit more to spend on your chocolate treats, the options are limitless. What a wonderful world!

    1. OMG, you’ve touched upon some of my favorite types of chocolate. I have to buy white chocolate in limited quantities because I have been known to inhale it so quickly, it’s almost as if it had never existed. And I am also particularly fond of the chocolate/orange combination. Scrumptious. Another combination I have become very fond of in recent years is chocolate sprinkled with salt. It may sound unusual, but there’s something quite satisfying about the sweet and salty mixture.

    1. With every comment, I am reminded about how many different kinds of chocolate combinations I adore, including chocolate-covered almonds. Almonds are actually almost a staple of my diet – they are so good for you. But when they are covered in chocolate, they are a special treat. In Canada, the big drugstore chain has its own brand of organic chocolate-covered almonds that are very, very affordable. And, therefore, very, very tempting.

  2. I admit it. I’m a snob when it comes to chocolate. My favorite is dark chocolate and I will never eat Hersey’s milk chocolate, even in a completely desperate moment.

  3. There’s nothing wrong with being a snob about your chocolate! Dark chocolate is actually the most healthy kind of chocolate and some experts say that a daily dose of dark chocolate is good for us. There are now quite a number of chocolate brands that are quite pure and unprocessed. Although the texture of these kinds of chocolate is a little different, they’re still quite satisfying. Check out your local heath food store for some of these brands.

    1. Brownies is a language I speak fluently. I’ve never been much of a baker, but there are a couple of spots in Toronto that make such amazing brownies that they’re worth the trip to Canada.

Le Petit Thuet has a couple of locations in my fair city and they make a brilliant flourless brownie – really rich and scrumptious.

Another place that comes to mind is the restaurant O+B Canteen in the TIFF Lightbox (Toronto’s famous film center). They serve up a decadent brownie paired with what tastes like a home made ice cream. Portion size is generous enough for two – well, um, unless you’re me. 😉

  4. I have always been and will always be a chocoholic. I love every kind except for white chocolate and the kind used on ice cream bars and fruit that hardens.

  5. This can’t be for the contest, but it is a pet peeve of mine, and thought I would voice it at least once! You say in your overview that this will end 7/21 at 6pm EST. It is now 7/21, 6:15AM!!! (7:15 EST, but you get the idea), and the Rafflecopter form is definitely showing OVER in the time remaining slot. It would be so nice if different parts would match!

    1. I apologize. I am glad you brought this to my attention. I will see how to rectify this. The problem is when I put in the information on Rafflecopter, it does not give me a choice for the time a giveaway is to end. Again I apologize.
