GIVEAWAY ENTRY PAGE “THE VIOLINIST’S THUMB” by Sam Kean ENDED

JULY 21st to AUGUST 4th, 2012

THE VIOLINIST’S THUMB

by SAM KEAN

SYNOPSIS:
There’s enough DNA in a single cell to stretch six feet tall, and enough DNA in our bodies to stretch almost to the moon. And within this DNA are stories that have been buried for millions of years–stories that can be used to solve historical mysteries about humans, and tell of our peculiar rise on earth.
In THE VIOLINIST’S THUMB, Sam Kean uses the forensic traces in our DNA to illuminate how humans evolved from primordial muck to the most dominant species on the planet, how studying language, art, and history can reveal the scientific workings of DNA–and vice-versa, and how the human line almost went extinct, twice, causing us to be more closely related than any other species.
There are genes to explain crazy cat ladies, a love of reckless activities, and a talent for the violin; genes that could allow someone to survive in the arctic. THE VIOLINIST’S THUMB uses genes to reveal so much about our past, and leaves us wondering if and how scientists will manipulate DNA to alter our species’ future.

  1. My son has Williams Syndrome, which is a deletion of genes in the 7th Chromosome. That’s usually what I think of when I start thinking about DNA. I hope one day they can figure out why they are deleted and develop ways to prevent the deletion from happening.

  2. I think of genetic diseases which are prevalent in many families and the tests that are done in order to detect the problems.

  3. I think of genealogy, solving crimes and unlocking its mysteries in order to cure diseases and disorders.

    1. For some reason or another, I accidentally hit a button which left my name as “s”. It’s Stefanie McMullen

  4. I think of it as that thing that “codes” us. It makes me think we were built to become what we are today all due to our programming in our DNA

  5. Thanks for the giveaway…I immediately think of Watson & Crick, the four base pairs, x-ray diffraction, the double helix, etc.

  6. Please Enter Me In Your Book Giveaway.
It Would Be Great To Win A Copy of The Violinist’s Thumb by Sam Kean.
In Response To Your Question Of WHAT THOUGHT(S) COMES
TO MIND WHEN YOU SEE AND/OR HEAR “DNA”?
My Answer Is I Think Of Science,Blood,Paternity Tests
And The Television Show CSI:Crime Scene Investigation.
    Thanks For Having This Giveaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Crime solving for sure. This book has a very interersting subject.
Thanks for the chance to win it.

  8. When I hear DNA I think about crime scenes and all the cases I see on tv that is solved by DNA or suspects who are absolved based on the results of their DNA tests.

  9. The very first thing that comes to mind is The Maury Povich show. He uses this technique all the time to help determine if the man is the actual father of the child in question.

  10. DNA means that we can catch criminals but also is useful for paternity tests (my little brother is going to get it done to see if his baby boy is his)… So DNA makes me think of my brother right now.
