Guest Authors Linda and Tony Cole

These authors may seem very familiar to you, and you are right.  They visited on January 4th, just a few short weeks ago.  They were generous and allowed me to host a giveaway of their inspirational book Resurrecting Anthony, which I read and reviewed.  However, it was brought to my attention, that I accidentally and unintentionally forgot to include a very important part of the posting that day.  So, after apologizing to Linda and Tony Cole and Tricia from Media Muscle, it is only fair to the Coles, that I repost the entire “Guest Author” showcase that should have been published on January 4th including the post that I forgot to post (the one that is in bold type).  I would greatly appreciate it, if you would please take the time to read the post in it’s entirety.

If you have followed me over this past year, you have an idea as to what type of books interest me and which ones don’t. However, Tricia from Media Muscle (The Book Trib) contacted me asking if I may be interested in reading and reviewing this particular book. After reading the synopsis, not only was I interested, I informed her that I would also like to be a host to introduce the authors to all of you. So please help me welcome Linda and Tony Cole today and I hope you find this book intriguing as I did.  You can read my review of Resurrecting Anthony here.

ABOUT LINDA AND TONY COLE

Tony and Linda Cole co-wrote Resurrecting Anthony: A True Story of Courage & Destination, which tells the story of their 12-year-old son’s heart attack and brain injury. A look back over the decade since the event helps the reader see how her once perfect family survived the devastating loss of a child and how a new family has come to be.    The Coles launched Anthony Cole Training in 1991, a company that builds sales cultures within organizations nationwide. An immediate success, by the end of 1998, the little company of two grossed half a million dollars. However, when their son became severely brain injured, the company down shifted for several years. In 2003, having adjusted to a new life and family, the company began to grow once again. Visit www.anthonycoletraining.com for more information.

Guest Post by Linda Cole, co-author of Resurrecting Anthony: A True Story of Courage & Destination:

On September 8, 1998, our idyllic world was shattered when our son Anthony, who was joining a basketball game on the playground of the junior high school, turned to his buddy, uttered “I don’t have a pulse,” and fell to the ground unconscious.

Seven to ten precious minutes ticked away before paramedics arrived to perform CPR and clear Anthony’s airway. In those few moments, our lives changed forever. Drastically.

The good news is that our son survived. The bad news is that he was so drastically affected by the lack of oxygen to his brain, that he is fully dependent, in a wheelchair and must rely upon us and nurses to do everything for him—even to the extent that we must help him roll over in bed.

The new life that was thrust upon us left Tony and I with inconsolable losses, for the reality is that our first son died on September 8, 1998. Never again would we know the child who could make his own single shot on the basketball court sound like a Michael Jordan move. Not only would he never play his favorite sport of basketball again, he wouldn’t remember that he played it with a passion every day or that his lifelong goal was to be a professional basketball player. Our Anthony, the one that was born on August 4, 1986, was gone forever.

Our intimate little family of four died that day as well. Our dynamic, the way we were together, the way we related to one another, changed immediately and radically. The burden and blessing of our “reborn” Anthony came with the full-time responsibilities of a medically complicated child who was in a coma for nearly a year. The pressures, financially, physically and emotionally, were overwhelming.

We were at a loss. We had no idea how to do any of this. We had no idea how to do life without Anthony.

A nurse once told me that 85% of marriages don’t make it through a tragedy like this and I understand, through our experience, why this is true. The losses of child, of family dynamic, of a life once lived, impose a grief that is inconsolable. The added pressures of around-the-clock care-taking and new financial responsibilities create environments rife with resentment and stress because it doesn’t matter what one might do, it will never be enough. There will never be a “fix”.

Twelve plus years have passed and our family has ridden the raging waters wrought by September 8, 1998. The river we ride is wide and calm. We have come to be in a good place as a family with a love that is layered with shared experiences, understanding and time gone by. I am thankful for this peaceful river of today for I recognize now that “I know not what tomorrow may bring”.

And I am sure of this—we will be together until death parts us.

About Resurrecting Anthony:

Tony and Linda Cole were living the American Dream—a successful national training company, a nice home, a close-knit circle of friends and a loving family.
Then came the call every parent dreads.
Their twelve-year-old son Anthony had collapsed on the school playground. In the ensuing panic-stricken moments, Anthony lay motionless, unconscious, not breathing. These critical minutes without oxygen left his brain damaged. In one heartbreaking afternoon their idyllic world was shattered and the son that Tony and Linda Cole knew was gone.
Resurrecting Anthony is the true, inspiring story of an unexpected tragedy that steals a child from his family and initially leaves them full of grief and sorrow. It reveals the Cole family’s incredible devotion and determination—despite the medical evidence and advice of health professionals—to return Anthony to his previous self.
Steadfast and single-minded of purpose, Tony Cole tries to balance stressful business demands and the emotional dynamics of a devastated family as he desperately tries to bring his son back.
Ultimately, it is a story of courage—the courage to summon inner strength to make hard decisions, the courage to do what must be done, and finally the courage to accept a new life and family.

RESURRECTING ANTHONY:
A True Story of Courage & Destination
By Linda Cole and Tony Cole

“Courage is the one telling trait that allows us to soldier on in the face of life’s greatest challenges,” writes Linda Cole. “We never know who we are capable of becoming until we are put to the test.” In this remarkable story RESURRECTING ANTHONY: A True Story of Courage & Destination (Alexandra Publishing, January 2011) authors Linda and Tony Cole find themselves stretched beyond anything they could have ever imagined when their 12-year-old son, Anthony, declares to a friend “I have no pulse” and collapses on the school playground.
It takes paramedics 13 tries to shock Anthony back to life, only to discover that the healthy, athletic boy has had a heart attack caused by a rare abnormal electrical pathway in his heart. It took four to five minutes to resuscitate him which deprived his brain of oxygen setting into motion a chain of medical events that ultimately resulted in global traumatic brain injury.
Drawing courage from their family and faith, the Coles face the enormity of Anthony’s situation and search for answers that will give them back their son. Ever the pragmatist, Linda plans for all of Anthony’s day-to-day care while Tony intensifies his efforts to coach his boy back to the person he was before his heart attack. Driven by the need to make progress before the window for optimal recovery closes, they begin an experimental treatment hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), to restore whatever function Anthony has left.
Slowly, glimpses of Anthony emerge, a light in his eyes, a brief smile, and one day, his first words since his journey began – “yeah, baby!” – inspired by cheerleaders during a football game on TV.
Anthony’s incremental progress leads to a series of personal revelations for his father. Tony’s test is to understand his new Anthony, whose greatest gift now is the ability to live totally and completely in the moment, the riveting heart of this tender tale. “I realized I must let go of my first Anthony in order to accept and love this new and different one,” Tony says.
“This was not an easy story to tell,” writes Linda Cole. “We found the courage to tell it because we hope that those in crisis will learn how to cope, how to be open and accepting of offered help, and how to advocate for needed services. We hope to inspire people to summon the courage they need to persevere, to commit without reservation, to adapt. We hope that others might learn from our mistakes and gain from our progress. We wrote this book and created the “Personal Courage SeriesTM” as a vehicle for people who have experienced life changing crisis to share their stories, learning and hope.”
The book also includes helpful “Toolbox” or takeaways for living through crisis which includes organizational advice for dealing with the maze and mountain of paperwork that results from hospital and insurance bills. It also has an indispensible directory of resources that includes contact info for groups such as: Brain Injury Association of America and the National Association of the State Directors of Developmental Disabilities. For more information please go to www.resurrectinganthony.com
Tony and Linda Cole are the founders of Anthony Cole Training Group established in 1991 to help sales people and their organizations drive consistent and predictable results through a unique, multi-faceted approach custom tailored to each organization.

Book Review "Every Little Thing"

EVERY LITTLE THING by Pamela Klaffke

Published by Harlequin/ Mira Books
ISBN 13: 9780778329237 0778329232
I received an ARC-EBook Bound galley Edition from NetGalley, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion.
Synopsis (borrowed from NetGalley):   If it’s not one thing, it’s her mother.
Before there were mommy bloggers, there was Britt. San Francisco’s brassy scandal queen filled her newspaper column with juicy details of her many marriages, cosmetic surgeries and everything about her only daughter, Mason.
Then Britt dies. Suddenly and in spectacularly embarrassing fashion. So Mason-now thirty-five and vehemently un-Britt-like in every way-returns home to settle her affairs…though some affairs are not so easy to settle.
Now caught in her own sordid debacle, Mason finds herself thrust back into the spotlight, and this time it’s her own doing.
Struggling to define herself as anything other than Britt Junior, Mason soon discovers that Britt’s intensely public life still held some secrets. And though the overgrown teen rebel has always favored combat boots, she may yet walk a mile in her mother’s shoes.
My Thoughts and Opinion: After reading the above synopsis, I thought this would be a perfect match for me to read. It was categorized as a humorous adult read and I assumed it was also going to be a “chick lit” book. When I first started accepting requests, I would read a minimum of 100 pages to decide if a book would go into a DNF pile, until an author and I had a discussion about my policy. He told me that a reader should be pulled into the story line a lot sooner than 100 pages so I changed my policy to 50 pages. I was very much looking forward to reading this book after have just completing a few in the mystery genre. However, to much disappointment, I struggled even to get to page 50. It was not at all what I thought it was going to be. For 50 pages, I was searching for what the plot was because all I was reading about were 5 adults, that were in their late twenties early thirties, and related by being step brothers and/or sisters. And in those first 50 pages what I did learn of these 5 adults was that they enjoyed drinking, where they were drinking and what they were drinking and what their actions were from drinking. Unfortunately, this book had to go in the DNF pile. It was not a book for me. Maybe if I had my old “Review Policy” of 100 pages, I would have been pulled into the story line, but the 50 page limit did not grab me. Or then maybe it is because I am not a twenty or thirty something and will leave it at that!

This week’s question:
Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all?

My answer:
Absolutely!!!  And it’s not a book but a series, of 13 books.  It is my favorite read of all time and called The Left Behind Series.  I am not sure if its because that when I tell someone what the premise of the books are or that it is a series of 13 books that kind of scares someone away.  It did me at first.  A friend of mine tried on different occasions to get me to read it and I finally gave in.  All it took was the first few chapters, I was hooked, and the series was done in a little over a month.  I am not sure if anyone has taken my advice to read it but whenever I am around readers, I always ask if anyone has read it, and the majority of the time they have, and the discussion turns directly to those books and similarities of the wold today.  Would love to know if any bloggers have read them and what they thought!!!

Sunday’s Shining Star !!

WELCOME!!!
I would like to explain how this came to fruition. Hubby and I were having a discussion about the old days, (for the young’ens reading this..a little history lesson) but before the dark age. When Sundays were special and had traditions and rituals. Sunday mornings Church, come home to a big gravy (sauce) cooking on the stove, a big Sunday dinner, then either off to visit relatives/friends or wait for relatives/friends to drop by. We would spend the afternoon sitting around the table, talking, catching up, having coffee, pizza, calzones, etc etc, dessert. And now, how sad, all those traditions are gone. And then I got to thinking, why not have something similar here on my blog. This past year, I have met so many amazing and wonderful people (some I now call friends) through blogging, and how I am in awe of what they do and accomplish. How much respect I have for them, for their honesty, integrity, credibility and so enjoy when a bit of their personality shines through. So every Sunday, here at my place, the coffee will be on, the dessert is on the table and friends will be stopping by. And I will be rolling out the red carpet for my Sunday Shining Star Blogger guest.
Photobucket
Has this happened to you during your blogging experience, you meet someone online, start chatting, find you have similar likes in books, start visiting that person’s blog and from her posts you get a feeling of her personality, start chatting some more, then find more similarities in real life and then something just clicks, and you know, that if you were to meet, that you would be bffs in real life too?  Well that has happened with my next Shining Star.  So please help me welcome this week’s guest, JULIE FROM READING WITHOUT RESTRAINT
*When and why did you start blogging?
I was cruising the internet late one night in April ’10 and I stumbled across Reading With Tequila, a wonderful book blog. Before then, I didn’t even know that book blogs even existed! After that, I was hooked and I started my own book blog. No one in my immediate family is an avid reader, so it is a great way for me to share my thoughts with like-minded book addicts!

*How and what made you decide on the name of your blog?
I thought of it right away. I wanted something catchy that flowed well. I think I did pretty good!

*What would you say is the main content of your blog?
Book reviews, bookish memes, etc……

*If books, what genres do you mostly read?
My favorites (at the moment) are thriller/suspense, chick lit and women’s fiction.

*How often do you post?
I try to post every day, but sometimes real life does get in the way. I am sure everyone knows how that goes?

*What are some of the things that you love about blogging?
The community! I have “met” some wonderful people that I consider true friends. I also love all of the book recommendations I have gotten. Before I started book blogging I never would have thought of reading paranormal or young adult, but now I do and I enjoy them.

*What are some of the negatives?
It is soooooo time consuming!

*Name 1-3 favorite items/postings that you have/do on your blog?
I love the memes In My Mailbox and It’s Monday What Are You Reading. I find the best books to add to my TBR list that way!

*Any advice you would give to new bloggers?
Be patient–your blog will grow on its own. Be honest in your reviews. Integrity in the book blogging community is very important!

*What draws you to follow someone’s blog?
The design catches my eye first. Second to that is if the blogger enjoys the same genres that I do.

*Do you have any “pet peeves” that other bloggers do?
Not really. None that I can think of anyway.

*Would you please share 5-7 things about the person behind the screen so that we get to know the “real” you!!
1. I am newly single
2. I am a horrible bookaholic! I can’t seem to stop buying them.
3. I have one sister and one baby niece in Phoenix
4. I have two dogs & one cat
5. I work for the federal gov’t

Julie and I have become very good friends, to the point where we even talk on the phone and are hoping to make plans to meet later this year.  It is difficult since we live on the opposite coasts of the United States.  She has such a kind, genuine, caring and huge heart.  A very emotionally strong and unconditional loving single mom who is trying (and succeeding) to teach her sons the morals and values of life.  She has been there for me during some rough times and I hope that I am offering her the same kind of support to her as she faces a difficult journey in her life.  If you haven’t stopped by her blog, and you have some time, her link is provided above, she writes phenomenal reviews.  Julie not only are you a Shining Star but I have the honor to call you my friend!!
