2015 Challenges

Did you think I disappeared?

I’m sure some of you have wondered where I have been. Some of you know that back in May I had a very extensive back operation, was in a back brace for close to 6 months and that hindered me from sitting at my computer. The surgery was a success and have been, and will continue to be, in outpatient PT for a while.

Unfortunately, however, I developed another medical issue, secondary to the back surgery, that will be requiring additional surgery scheduled for Jan. 12th. This operation will not be as extensive but will take the usual healing time of 6-8 weeks.

The problem was not discovered until recently, and during the past 4 months of not feeling well, going through tests to find out what might be going on, I slipped into another reading slump. BUT..it’s that time of year, and if you know me, you know I love the reading challenges, so I am hoping this is just what I need to kick myself into reading again!!!

So these are the challenges I will be signing on for:

Read-A-Thons

I am so excited about these 2 upcoming Read-A-Thons, especially now that I am officially out of my year long slump and have my reading mojo back.

I still have many restrictions, since my back surgeries, and per doctor’s orders, am not allowed to do much except rest, walk and sleep so these 2 Read-A-Thons will help me pass the time.

Want to join with me?  Here’s the info:

Tomorrow starts Pick-Your-Thon hosted by The Book Monsters

The Monster Read and Review-a-thons are a great chance for us all to get together, read some fabulous reads, and get to those reviews that we know have been sitting there waiting to be done for a little too long. You can read as much as you want. Review till you cannot review anymore. Whatever works best for you! In addition to the Thons, we will be hosting some fun related challenges, great prizes, and a Twitter party.

You decide how much you want to participate. Whether it is just for a few days in reading then switching to reviewing or only participating on one or the other… what you get done depends on you! This reading event is hosted by The Book Monsters. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

And starting August 18th is:

August 18, 2014 – August 24, 2014

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 18th and runs through Sunday, August 24th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 11 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

2014 A-Z Challenge

WOOHOO!  My buddy Lori is hosting the A-Z challenge again so I had to jump aboard.  Now if only my slump will end in 2014!  Want to join?  Here are the details:

alphabet 2014 500
After some really nice emails and encouragement from all of you
I have decided to host another A-Z Challenge in 2014.
The Alphabet Soup Challenge means that by December 31, 2014
your bowls must be full of one book for each letter of the Alphabet.
Each Letter Counts As 1 Spoonful
spoon
Details
This challenge will run from January 1st, 2014 until December 31st, 2014.
You can join anytime. You do not have to review the book.
You do not need to link up each spoonful.
Make a page or a post or a GoodReads shelf where you will keep track of your spoonfuls. I keep track of mine on my Challenge Page.
After you complete the challenge just come to the 2014 Alphabet Soup Page under the Challenges tab at the top of my blog and leave a comment with your completed list.
Crossovers to other challenges are allowed and encouraged!
It’s an alphabet challenge!!! The challenge is to read one book that has a title starting with every letter of the alphabet.
You can drop the A’s and The’s from the book titles as shown below.
So there are two different ways you can set up your own A-Z Reading Challenge.
A – How I plan to do it: Make a list on your blog from A-Z. Throughout the year, as you go along, add the books you are reading to the list. Towards the end of the year, you can check and see which letters you are missing and find books to fit.
OR
B – Make a list now of 26 books, picking one for each letter of the alphabet. For example: A – Assaulted Pretzel by Laura Bradford B- Buried in a Bog by Sheila ConnollyC – Cat Trick by Sofie Kelly D – A Deal to Die For by Josie Belle etc.
Books can be read in any order and all formats – print – e-book – audio – are acceptable for this challenge!
Ready to join??

Non-bloggers you can join too! Just keep track any way you wish and enter a link below if available or sign up in the comment section. You can even set up a special shelf on Goodreads.com to help you keep track!
Need some help finding titles to match the alphabet – Jandy’s Reading Room has a wonderful list to get you started. X and Z were the toughest for me so this year I am going to try to take care of those two early.
Follow Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book as there may be special announcements made about the challenge.

2014 Challenges

It’s that wonderful time of year!!! Sign ups for 2014 Reading Challenges.

Unfortunately I had a major slump this year, reading a total of 7 books. I can only remember 1 time in my life that I had a reading slump this bad. Needless to say, I didn’t even come close in completing the 2013 Challenges. I am hoping that in 2014, the slump ends. And in being positive, I will attempt to participate in a few Challenges.  They are:

2013 Challenges

I surrender!!!!   Go ahead….you can laugh at me.  But I’m sure, that if you know me, you already knew that I wasn’t going to be able to control myself.  And with only 1 day left in 2012, how could I not add at least one, two, ok, a few more challenges!!  Want to join me?  Details below:

Justification:  This challenge is so needed because I am now up to 3 shelves, not including my EReaders, of TBR requested review books that have been sitting in my bookcase crying out, “Please read me…did you forget about me?” lol

Embarrassment of Riches TBR Reading Challenge 2013
Hosted by Patricia at PlanetPooks
RULES: To be considered a TBR book, you must own it prior to Jan 1, 2013. The book can count toward other challenges, as well. It can be fiction or nonfiction, poetry or play, as long as it is a book. This is not a picky challenge–just about reading the riches we already own.

On the last day of each month I will post an entry where you can say how many TBRs you read that month, titles, and whether you liked them or not. Full-blown reviews not required. You can list them in comments or link back to your own blog or page where they are listed.

At the end of the year I will have pretty badges for all levels, and if I haven’t learned to create them by myself, hopefully somebody else will make them for me.

There are five levels of accomplishment (and a bonus challenge) in the Embarrassment of Riches TBR Reading Challenge.

Copper: Read 6 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Bronze: Read 12 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Silver: Read 24 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013

Gold: Read 36 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Platinum: Read 50 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Bonus Challenge! The same levels are also available for digital samples. If you are like me, you also have a quizillion samples you’ve downloaded onto your e-reader. Culling through samples and deciding whether to keep reading or not is a separate challenge with all five levels and the same year-end prize–a special badge.

So, are you in? And have I left anything out? I’ve never done this before, so let me know if I need to adjust anything or add anything! Use Mister Linky to link to your blog or wherever you might announce your participation in this challenge, and leave a comment below to say which will be your goal for 2013. You will get the appropriate badge/prize for whatever you read, whether you come in under or over your goal.
For more information and to sign-up, please  see this post.

Justification:  Due to the rapid growth of PICT and PBP, my reading has been affected big time!!  So…I need to get back into the groove and figured this challenge would be my initiative to read at least 1 book a week.

52 Books in 52 Weeks
Hosted by Robin at My Two Blessings

Are you ready for another round of Reading 52 books in 52 Weeks? Whether you are just joining in or continuing on for another round, the rules are very simple. The goal is to read one book (at least) a week for 52 weeks. Make the year easy and casual or kick it up by exploring new to you authors and genres. Challenge yourself to read at least some classics or delve into that chunkster (more than 500 pages) you always wanted to tackle. The goal is to read 52 books. How you get there is up to you.

  1. The challenge will run from January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013.
  2. Our book weeks begin on Sunday.
  3. Participants may join at any time.
  4. All books are acceptable except children books.
  5. All forms of books are acceptable including e-books, audio books, etc.
  6. Re-reads are acceptable as long as they are read after January 1, 2013.
  7. Books may overlap other challenges.
  8. Create an entry post linking to this blog.
  9. Sign up with Mr. Linky in the “I’m participating post” below this post.
  10. You don’t need a blog to participate. Post your weekly book in the comments section of each weekly post.
  11. Mr. Linky will be added to the bottom of the weekly post to link to reviews of your most current reads.
  12. More details on her blog.  Click on link above to join in the fun!!

And the last one, unless more get posted that I can’t resist, is  one that I have yet to complete.  But will keep trying until I do.  Plus I just love the button!!!
