Guest Author Lesley Kagen

How I wish that genies in bottles were real and I would come across one, don’t you?  I know one of my wishes would be to have the ability to read every single book I wanted to, including the one written by today’s guest.  But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case.  However, Nicole from Tribute Books, is stopping by today to introduce us to this author and I have already put her book on my tbr list.  Please help me welcome Ms. Lesley Kagen!!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I was born in Milwaukee and spent my early years in a great working class neighborhood, much like the one whereWhistling in the Dark and Good Graces are set.

I attended Marquette University for one year, fell in love, and followed my boyfriend to New York City. I lasted about six months. I was so intimidated, I spent most of my time running from my apartment to the grocery store and back to my apartment, which was located above a 24 Hour Soul Record Store. Hence, I have the dubious ability to recite every lyric to every James Brown tune ever recorded.

After returning to Milwaukee, I enrolled in the University of Wisconsin where I majored in Radio and Television. I fell into a job as a morning drive DJ on one of the country’s first alternative radio stations—WZMF. I got to interview lots of very cool rock n’ rollers like Frank Zappa, Hendrix and John Lennon.

In 1976, I moved to Los Angeles, where I began a ten year career working for Licorice Pizza record chain where I produced, wrote and voiced thousands of commercials as Lesley from Licorice Pizza. When I set out to expand my career, I ended up doing on-camera commercials, a couple of Movies-Of-The-Week, and a Laverne and Shirley.

I met my husband, Peter aka Sushi Man, in Malibu, which is pretty funny considering he was from Milwaukee as well. While we both loved living in California, after the birth of our kids, Casey and Riley, we felt this overwhelming need to return to the roost, so we moved back home in 1990.

Well, that’s about it. Oh, wait. The writing. I adore it. I crave it. But it wasn’t until Casey went off to college, and teenage Riley made it clear that any form of communication between us was to be restricted to—”With or without pepperoni”—that I found the opportunity to sit down and let ‘er rip. I hope you love reading Whistling in the Dark, Land of a Hundred Wonders, Tomorrow River and Good Graces as much as I loved writing them.

You can visit Lesley at her website, Facebook, Book Blogs Tour, and Good Graces blog.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q. Tell us a little about Good Graces.
A.  It’s the story of two young sisters, Sally and Troo O’ Malley, set during the summer of 1960 on the west side of Milwaukee.  It’s a sequel to my first novel, Whistling in the Dark.
Q.  Was it tough to write a sequel to such a popular book?
A. I was scared to death, but once the ball got rolling it was wonderful to be back in Milwaukee.  My previous two books were set in the South, so it was relief to be back home.
Q. Back home?  Are you from Milwaukee?
A. I was born and raised there in a blue collar neighborhood much like the one where the stories are set.  I moved to New York for awhile, and then lived in LA for fifteen years, and moved back home after I had my children.  I wanted them to have the same kind of childhood I had.  (I live in a small town outside of Milwaukee now.  I’m a nature girl at heart.)
Q. How do you get your ideas for a story?
A. Location is important to me.  I’ll get an idea, a feeling, really, where I’d like to spend the year or so that it might take to write a book.  Once I feel firmly ensconced in the setting, my characters start appearing.  I don’t outline, or have any idea generally what a story is going to be about.  I trust the process and let ‘er rip.
Q. Have you ever had writer’s block?
A. My problem is that I have too many ideas and don’t know which to listen to. I think writer’s get blocked when they think too much about a story.  You have to allow it to develop.  To stand back and let it take charge.  When you try to interfer with the creative process, you’re just asking for trouble.
Q. Anyone else in your family write?
A. My son has the talent, but he hasn’t tapped it yet.  And my daughter and husband are fantastic editors.  Especially my daughter who is an attorney.  Her mind is so different than mine.  She can spot problems in a manuscript sooner than I can, and is not shy about offering suggestions.
Q.What do you like most about being a writer?
A. Beside working in my pajamas?  I love discovering every morning what turns the story will take.
Q. What do you like most about being an author?
A. It means a lot to me when readers send me an email or bump into me at an event and tell me how much they enjoyed a story.  And book clubs.  They’re fantastic.  Writing is such solitary work.  I often spend more time with my characters than real people.  Getting out and talking to book clubbers is refreshing.  Fun!  And they have the best baked treats!
Q. Is there anything you don’t like about being published?
A. Bad reviews aren’t much fun.  Every author gets them.  It’s part of the job.
Q. How do you handle them?
A. I try not to read reviews  Good or bad.  Books are a buffet.  Some diners are going to love Crab Rangoon, some not.  It’s often just a matter of taste.
Q. Anything you’d like to add?
A. Happy Holdiays to one and all.  Wishing you the best New Year ever!
ABOUT THE BOOK
Lesley Kagen returns with the sequel to her national bestselling debut, Whistling in the Dark.

Whistling in the Dark captivated readers with the story of ten-year-old Sally O’Malley and her sister, Troo, during Milwaukee’s summer of 1959. The novel became a New York Times bestseller and was named a Midwest Honor Award winner.

In Good Graces, it’s one year later, and a heat wave has everyone in the close-knit Milwaukee neighborhood on edge. None more so than Sally O’Malley, who remains deeply traumatized by the sudden death of her daddy and her near escape from a murderer and molester the previous summer. Although outwardly she and her sister, Troo, are more secure, Sally’s confidence in her own judgment and much of her faith have been whittled away. When a series of disquieting events unfold in the neighborhood-a string of home burglaries, the escape from reform school of a nemesis, and the mysterious disappearance of an orphan, crimes that may involve the increasingly rebellious Troo-Sally is called upon to rise above her inner demons. She made a deathbed promise to her daddy to keep Troo safe, a promise she can’t break, even if her life depends on it. But when events reach a crisis point, will Sally have the courage and discernment to make the right choices? Or will her false assumptions lead her and those she loves into danger once again?

Lesley Kagen’s gift for imbuing her child narrators with compelling authenticity shines as never before in Good Graces, a novel told with sensitivity, wit, and warmth.

Guest Author Catherine Larose

Today the ladies of WOW Tours are stopping by, and once again, introducing us to one amazing woman.  A world traveler and now an author.   Since I did read her book, I can say, it may be her debut book, but put her on your radar because I doubt this will be her only novel.  Sp please help me welcome Cat Larose and the ladies of WOW!!!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Catherine is one part hot blooded Latin and one part wild eyed Celt. She’s the oldest of seven children raised in a large Irish/Italian family – Catholic, of course. But family and friends think of her as the gypsy. She’s spent her life studying, living, and working all over the place. Cat is forever destined to wander incessantly as a person currently without country(CWC), or with no fixed address(NFA). Blessing or curse? Grandma V had her pegged long before she ever left Clevleand, Ohio when she gave her red-headed Italian granddaughter this advice , “All you need is a place to hang your hat.”

As she was traveling the world, Cat managed to acquire a husband. A rather beige husband. Not a good match considering the fact that Cat sells color for a living. What does that mean? When you go to a home improvement store and to choose a paint color, those little color chips are made by Cat’s company. They produce color chips for the automotive industry, cosmetic industry and of course your local Home Depot. While in Paris on business, Cat decided that life was too short to be beige. Her memoir is a record of her escape from the beige tinge of her marriage to the wild colors of singlehood.
You can visit Catherine at her website here.

AnyColor but Beige: Living Life in Color

By Catherine Larose

In her memoir, Any Color but Beige: Living Life in Color, author and colormarketer Cat Larose finally comes to the realization that the picture-perfectlife she created was missing something essential – color.    Once she identified what was wrong, Cat foundhappiness by living life in color. Use the quiz below to determine if you needto add more color to your life.
Start by answering“yes” or “no” for each question.
1.           Can youname the last time you felt a rush of happiness?
2.           Do you liketo try new things?
3.           Is there atleast one person, place or activity you are passionate about?
4.           Do youindulge in that passion often?
5.           Can youlaugh at yourself?
6.           Do you havea short bucket list?
7.           Have youdone something spontaneous in the last week?
8.           Have youlaughed or shared a laugh in the last day?
9.           Do yousmile for no reason?
10.       Do you havea curious mind and an open spirit?
11.       Do you makeyourself a priority?
12.       Do you knowyour favorite color and indulge in it?
13.       Do youenjoy your own company?
14.       Do youtreat yourself to little (or big) things on occasion?
15.       Do you haveone true friend you can turn to in joy or despair?
16.       Do younurture your spiritual side?
17.       Do you giveback, even in just a small way?
18.       Do you livein the moment?
19.       Are you awork in progress, learning and growing with every experience?
20.       Do you have a personal mantra, motto orspecial book or song that defines you?

Scoring
For each “yes” response, give yourself five points.  For each “no” response, subtract one point.  Add up the points to reveal your color score.
Color Lost: less than 25 color points
Oops! Looks like you’ve misplaced your color compass. A little Meditation Mauve (from the Any Color but Beige color palettes) would serve you well as a starting point to get back on track. Leonardo da Vinci believed that meditating in a purple light increased effectiveness tenfold.  Hang a purple crystal in your window and bask in its beams.  Now that is a mood swing for the better!

Color Roadblock:  26 – 50 color points

Time for a makeover – just add color.  You are eyeing that box of crayons, poised and ready to choose your signature color.  Who would have thought such a bold, marvelous creature was hiding behind all that sensible beige?  Try adding some Marvelous Darling (from the Any Color But Beige color palettes) with clothing or accessories, to get moving again.

Flying Down the Highway: 51 – 75 color points
You are officially on Adventure Road. If color were a country, you would have a passport! Whether it’s from around the corner or around the world, you collect colorful souvenirs and use them to decorate your inner and outer space.  Seize opportunities to bring colorful pieces of your travels and adventures home. Who says you can’t take it with you?

End of the Rainbow: 76 – 100 color points
Congratulations, you have a rainbow in your pocket! Your life encompasses a full spectrum of color experiences.  Time to take all that Zenergy (from the Any Color but Beige color palettes) and share it with others.  Start a blog, write your memoir or just find time to share colorful experiences with others.  Keep focused on living life in color to continue to reap the benefits.

Cat’s Top 10 Tips for Living Life in Color:

  1. Take time for pit stops of happiness. Pull off the road every now and then and be good to yourself. Even if it is just for a quiet moment of coffee.
  2. Add discipline–it provides proportional returns. What you get out of anything is equal to what you put in.
  3. Realize that advice is just a validation of the decision you are about to make.
  4. Ask, “Would I rather be right or happy?” If you want to be happy, then be willing to change your mind.
  5. Accept the consequences of your decisions and move on.
  6. Live (temporarily) with your fear, guilt or embarrassment until you get over it–and you will get over it.
  7. Overcome analysis/paralysis.
  8. Ask the right question–not “why” (blame) but “how” (action).
  9. You do not have to be an expert. Just be honest with yourself.
  10. Take advantage of new opportunities. If not now, when?

ABOUT THE BOOK
Synopsis:
After years of living a beige existence, Cat Larose, international color marketing expert, finally added a little color to her own life. All it took was a Paris sunset and a little red suitcase.

Everyone wanted Cat’s life. She had a handsome husband, a stylish home and a fascinating career as an international color marketing consultant. Work took Cat to some of the world’s most beautiful cities but something was missing: ironically, it was color. One day she found herself in Paris watching a sunset and, in a moment of clarity, she caught a glimpse of her sepia-toned future.

When Cat got home, she did what she’d longed to do for years. She decided to paint her bedroom a magnificent Bordeaux red and put an end to her beige existence and her marriage. That was the beginning of a new life.

Any Color but Beige
is a bright, funny, genuine account of one woman’s search for love in the deep end of the dating pool. None of the self-help books prepared Cat for the often funny, occasionally puzzling, sometimes sad but always colorful dating adventures with an international cast of frogs, princes and players. Cat makes the classic female mistake of thinking that love is a life preserver. Until one day she learns to swim.

Guest Author and Review Mark Smythe

Cold weather is here in New England, which means snow is right around the corner.  So when Rebecca from The Cadence Group contacted me to read, review and have the author stop by, I thought it would be fun.  So without further ado, please help me welcome, Mr. Mark Smythe!!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mark Smythe resides in a small, rural town located in the beautiful Southern geography of Western New York State.  It is a lovely and quaint agricultural community, just South of Buffalo, New York.

He, his wife Sandra and their two children, Cassandra and Alexander, live on a picturesque, turn-of-the-century farm complete with a charming old white farmhouse, quaint red barns and wooden pasture fences.
Mark is an Interior Structural Fire Fighter with a local Volunteer Fire Department, and is also a member of the Emergency & Rescue Squad.
The concept for this particular book began years ago, as an original bedtime story that he made up for his own children, which they always asked for and seemed to like, especially on those cold and snowy winter nights, so reminiscent of the Northeast.

MY REVIEW

THE SNOWMAN’S REVENGEby Mark Smythe

Illustrations by Mike Motz

Published by Mark Smythe
ISBN-13: 9780982270400
At the request of The Cadence Group, a TPB was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion.

Synopsis (from the author): The snow’s piled up high and school’s cancelled, so let’s play outside and, of course, build a snowman! Now, what if you were left out in the cold snow all by yourself, like that poor snowman? Would you be mad? Of course you would!

Well, this snowman is out for revenge, especially after he sees those kids in the nice warm house, eating cookies and drinking hot chocolate! So, let’s see what happens in this delightful story, nicely flowing with rhymed verse, very beautifully illustrated and quite humorous indeed.
So lovable, it’s sure to be an instant favorite and a timeless classic with “kids” of all ages.

My Thoughts and Opinion: When I was approached to read and review this book, I thought it would be fun, especially with the holidays just around the corner. But in fairness to the author, I must admit, that since I did not have the opportunity to read it to a young child to obtain a reaction of a little one, it is based solely on my opinion of the book. The book is written in a rhyming fashion. I found the illustrations to be vivid and colorful which I would think would keep a child’s attention. However, the premise of the story is of the revenge of one angry snowman. I thought that and the images to go along with that part of the story line, a bit scary for a child, but again, that is my opinion. Because it has been many years that I have had the pleasant experience of reading to a youngster, I don’t feel that I am qualified to give this book a rating, only my opinion.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Laura Loss came of age in the hardcore punk scene of the early 1980s. The jailbait bass player in her brother Anthony’s band, she grew up traveling the country, playing her heart out in a tight network of show venues to crowds soaked in blood and sweat. The band became notorious, the stars of a shadow music industry. But when Laura was 18, it all fell apart. Anthony’s own fans destroyed him, something which Laura never forgot.
Ten years later, Laura finds her true fame with the formation of The Mistakes, a gifted rock band that bursts out of ‘90s Seattle to god-like celebrity. When she discovered Nathan and Sean, the two flannel-clad misfits who, along with her, composed the band, she instantly understood that Sean’s synesthesia—a blending of the senses that allows him to “see” the music— infused his playing with an edge that would take them to the top. And it did. But it, along with his love for Laura, would also be their downfall.
At the moment of their greatest fame, the volatile bonds between the three explode in a mushroom cloud of betrayal, deceit, and untimely endings. The world blames Laura for destroying its rock heroes. Hated by the fans she’s spent her life serving, she finally tells her side of the story, the “true” story, of the rise and fall of The Mistakes.

I’m sure by now, most of you know, I can’t pass up a good mystery. That’s why when Rebecca from The Cadence Group contacted me to read and review his book,  I had such a difficult time saying that word all of us book addicts have saying, the word, NO.  But reluctantly I had to because I am so far behind, but I offered instead to share this fantastic sounding book with all of you.  So please help me welcome author Kurt Kamm.

GUEST POST

The Female Inmates at Los Angeles County Fire Camp 13
It is not uncommon for states or counties to maintain fire camps for low security male prisoners, where they are trained in firefighting skills. More unusual is a camp for female inmates. In writing my firefighter mystery novels, I have had the opportunity to visit many of the Los Angeles County Fire
facilities. One of the most interesting is Camp 13.
Camp 13 is up in the Malibu hills, near a private golf club (!), and is run jointly by Los Angeles County Correctional Department and Fire Department. The women in the camp are nonviolent offenders. Most are serving sentences of up to five years for drug related offences, burglaries, identity theft or welfare fraud.
Camp 13 is low security, with ordinary chain link fences. The Camp Superintendent told me he could remember only one instance of an inmate walking away from the camp. For the inmates it is a source of pride to be there, and no one wants to jeopardize the opportunity.
There are approximately 110 women at the camp. They are chosen when they have less than half their sentence left and are not considered a flight risk. Most have approximately two years left to serve, and 5 – 10 are paroled out of the camp every month.
Each day at Camp 13 counts for three days served against the sentence. The inmates come from the Chino Institute for Women, which houses 3,000 inmates. At Chino, the prisoners are paid $1.70 – $3.60 for their prison work. At Camp 13 the women earn an extra $1.00 per hour. As distinguished from male prisoners,
there are few racial issues and no gangs among the women inmates.
There is a waiting list of up to 40 inmates, and the opportunity to go to Camp 13 is highly coveted. The women receive training at Chino before coming to Camp 13.
The facility looks like a beat-up summer camp for kids. It consists of simple one-story buildings which house the inmates, corrections officers, and fire supervisors. There are the usual dining halls, laundries, and limited recreational areas.
The women are divided into fire crews of 14. Their job is to cut fire lines and clear brush. They are transported to fires in the same type of fire crew truck used by other wildland firefighters. In many cases they work side-by-side with the paid firefighters on the firelines, although they are kept away from the most dangerous situations.
Two women in each crew operate 21 inch chainsaws (they are the“sawyers”), and one woman helps the saw operators (the “bucker”). The remainder wield shovels, Mcleods (a hoe-rake device, pronounced “mc cloud”) and Pulaskis (a chopping device similar to an axe). On the firelines, as well as at the camp, the women wear distinctive orange jumpsuits, which identify them as prisoners.
I have been out in the field with these women. They are proud of their work and work hard at it. It can be exhausting. They are encouraged and complimented by the firefighters who supervise them. It may be the first time in their lives they are accomplishing something and are getting positive reinforcement.
While the work at Camp 13 clearly helps build the self-esteem of the inmates, it is unfortunate that two-thirds return to the prison system.
