Outdo Yourself 2011 Challenge

I am so excited, and wanted to share, what I just found…The Perfect 2011 Challenge, at least for me.  I have said in the past, that when I first became involved, I joined everything and anything and really didn’t realize what it all entailed.  I will be starting my 2nd year, and have learned a few things along the way, one of them being which type of challenges to enter.  I knew when I signed up for the 100+ for 2010 that I would not complete it but wanted to see how close I might have come.  I just signed up for the ideal challenge and wanted to let you in on all the details……

Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge
Hosted by The Book Vixen

Details:

Runs January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011 (books read prior to 1/1/11 do not count towards the challenge). You can join at anytime. You can sign up on The Book Vixen’s blog.

The goal is to outdo yourself by reading more books in 2011 than you did in 2010. See the different levels below and pick the one that works best for you. Nothing is set in stone; you can change levels at any time during the challenge.

Books can be any format (bound, eBook, audio).

Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are fine.

You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them. It is not required that you review the books you read for this challenge but feel free to do so.

Post this reading challenge on your blog so you can keep a list of the books you’ve read for this challenge. Please include a link back to this post so readers can join the challenge too.

You do not have to be a book blogger to participate. You can keep tabs on books you’ve read for this challenge on Goodreads or LibraryThing if you’d like (maybe make a shelf for “Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge”). If you are not on either of those sites then you can list the books you read for this challenge in the comments on my wrap-up post, which will be up at the end of 2011.

Levels:

Getting my heart rate up – Read 1–5 more books
Out of breath – Read 6–10 more books
Breaking a sweat – Read 11–15 more books
I’m on fire! – Read 16+ more books

Want to join me?  Then head on over to The Book Vixen and sign up.  I am going to try to “get out of breath” in 2011.  Wish me luck!!!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
*Grab your current read
*Open to a random page
*Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
*BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
*Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

At two a.m., he slipped on a pair of leather gloves and pulled a balaclava over his face.  He retrieved a P40 semiautomatic pistol from his glove compartment and screwed on a silencer.  He set the gun on the seat beside him while he stuffed several pairs of flexicuffs and a roll of duct tape into his pocket.

Where do you get the books you read? Are you a faithful library patron? Or maybe a bookstore junkie? Do you exchange books with friends or family members?

Pre December 2009, I was all of the above.  If a book could be found, I would be in whatever type establishment it was.  However since 2010, I would say that approximately 90% of my books are sent to me for requested reviews.  The other 10% would be ebooks that I purchase that are on my personal tbr bucket list,  books that I win from giveaways entered or book swaps.
As for the 2nd part of today’s question, I apologize in advance if there are any authors reading this response, since I have been told that authors cringe when they hear about passing books on.  Yes, unless if it is signed, I do.  I just CAN’T throw a book away and after a while the house if overtaken by books so I have to pass them on, swap, and/or donate.  A few months ago, it was so bad that I got up the courage and purged 4 boxes of PBs that have been on my shelves for many, many years and donated them.  There are still  a lot and wonder if I will read them all in my lifetime, but I will die trying to lol.

Product Review

You may remember a while back that I told you that we had become empty nesters and decided to makeover one of the rooms to be my office/library.  At the same time CSN Stores had contacted me about their site, and since I needed a sturdy desk chair because of my back, I purchased an ergonomic desk chair from csnstores.com.

Since the time I received my chair, hubby was a bit jealous that he didn’t have one for his computer work area.  If you knew my DH, you would know that he never, ever goes and despises to shop.   But since he could shop, right from home, without going out, he went to the CSN Stores site and went shopping.  He decided that this model of desk chair was the one he wanted and purchased.

He patiently waited for his ergonomic leather desk chair and it was delivered approximately within a week.  He got right to work at the installation process, which he said was easy and with the help of the detailed instructions, took very little time.  Once it was all put together, he settled in and tried it out.  He loved it!!!!  He tells me it is very sturdy and comfortable.  You may have noticed that I said “he tells me” lol because he has made it very clear that this one is HIS chair.  He did, however, allow me to sit in it and try it out and it is everything he says.  However, the CSN Stores site has turned my husband into a shopping monster since there are so many products and he has his eyes on quite a few items.  Now, not only me, but hubby too, recommend this is the site to do your one stop shopping.
His rating for his new chair:  5/5

Today’s Question:
What do you think about this quote? Do you believe this to be true? If so, why and how? And, if not, why not?
“What counts, in the long run, is not what you read; it is what you sift through in your own mind; it is the ideas and impressions that are aroused in you by your reading.”
(pg. 7-8, “You Learn By Living” by Eleanor Roosevelt)
My Answer:
I love this quote and believe it to be true, at least for me.  No matter what genre I am reading, even the mysteries that I usually read 80% of the time, can trigger personal memories.  I read for pleasure but I also read to fuel my imagination.  When I am reading a really good book and can be, what I call, “transported” into the plot, it is like I am seeing a movie in my mind.  The dialogue, traits, emotions and actions of the characters also can be thought provoking for me as to what I would do in the situation.  And if it is powerful, the impression stays with me for a very long time.  For example, I read The Diary of Anne Frank when I was in elementary school, which was eons ago, but to this day, I can recall the images that I took away from the book.  So my answer to today’s question is, I definitely agree with the above quote.

Review "And One Last Thing" by Molly Harper

And One Last Thing by Molly Harper
Published by Gallery Books
A Division of Simon & Schuster
ISBN 978-1-4391-6877-6
At the request of Gallery Books, a TPB was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion.
Synopsis (back of book): “If Singletree’s only florist didn’t deliver her posies half-drunk, I might still be married to that floor-licking, scum-sucking, receptionist-nailing hack-accountant, Mike Terwilliger.”
Lacey Terwilliger’s shock and humiliation over her husband’s philandering prompt her to add some bonus material to Mike’s company newsletter: stunning Technicolor descriptions of the special brand of “administrative support” his receptionist gives him. The detailed mass e-mail to Mike’s family, friends and clients blows up in her face, and before one can say “instant urban legend,” Lacey has become the pariah of her small Kentucky town, a media punch line, and the defendant in Mike’s defamation lawsuit.
Her seemingly perfect life up in flames, Lacey retreat to her family’s lakeside cabin, only to encounter an aggravating neighbor named Monroe. A hunky crime novelist with a low tolerance for drama, Monroe. A hunky crime novelist with a low tolerance for drama, Monroe is not thrilled about a newly divorced woman moving in next door. But with time, beer, and a screen door to the nose, a cautious friendship develops into something infinitely more satisfying.
Lacey has to make a decision about her long-term living arrangements, though. Should she take a job writing caustic divorce newsletters for paying clients, or move on with her own life, pursuing more literary aspirations? Can she find happiness with a man who tells her what he thinks and not what she wants to hear? And will she ever be able to resist saying one…last…thing?
My Thoughts and Opinion: WTG Lacey!!!! This is one chick lit that has to be read especially if you have even a little spark of a revengeful B__ch in you, which I am sure the majority of us do. Lacey, the main character, is someone I would love to know and felt that I did. The author did a fantastic job at writing in a way that brought this character to life. She was feisty, impulsive, funny, melancholy, lonesome, hurt, disappointed, hopeful and so many other emotions, that this reader could not help but root for her and found myself thinking “You Go Girl.” But sometimes it can backfire, in this case, it did for Lacey. This book was so enjoyable that I am afraid to even inadvertently include spoilers so I will ask some questions. OK..after writing one last thing and hits enter, her email goes viral. Now what? How can she, the victim, now become the outcast? What does she do when served with a legal document, not only for divorce but damages of slander? How will she manage financially when her husband wanted her to be a stay at home wife taking care of social commitments? Will she take a job writing newsletters for other scorned women like the newsletter that got her in legal hot water? And who is this gorgeous guy renting out the neighbor’s cabin but appears to be a rude, cold, loner? What happens when her husband begs for forgiveness and wants to reconcile? What road does Lacey take? I highly suggest you put this one on your TBR list….it’s a good one!!!
