THE DIVORCE GIRL

by CARYN MIRIAM-GOLDBERG

SYNOPSIS:
Meet Deborah Shapiro, a New Jersey teenage photographer whose parents’ outrageous divorce lands her in the biggest flea market in the free world, a Greek diner with immigration issues, a New York City taxi company, a radical suburban synagogue, a hippie-owned boutique, and bowling alleys, beaches and bagel shops. As her home explodes apart, a first love, a series of almost-mothers, and a comical collection of eccentric mentors show Deborah how to make art out of life, and life from the wreckage of a broken home. This debut novel of Kansas Poet Laureate Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg travels through wild loss, untended grief and bad behavior with humor and imagination. Reminiscent of the works of Wally Lamb, Stephanie Kallos, and Kaye Gibbons, this coming of age story illuminates how a daring heart can turn a broken girl into a woman strong enough to craft a life of art, soul and beauty.

  2. Hopefully they make you better but unfortunately some people will always emerge bitter.

  3. It depends on the person and how they. Develop.

  4. wish it made all of us better, but sometimes it just doesn’t quite work out that way.

  5. I think that it could go either way, depending on the person.

  6. Some bitter, some better.

  7. I believe it depends on the person. I’m very much of an optimist. I look back over past struggles and see how much I’ve learned and gained from them. People think I’m crazy when I say I was fortunate to grow up in a poor household, but because I had to be frugal I learned to knit, sew and quilt at a young age. I was making all my own clothes by the time I was 12.

  8. I believe that many individuals are many stronger and better people from life’s struggles. Right now I am battling a disease and am remaining courageous and hopeful. It is hard to have to face adversity but it makes you a more compassionate person.

  9. I think struggles contribute to character. Not always in a good way tho.

  10. I thhink it can go either way although I think bitter often wins.

  11. Depending on the person, life’s struggles can make someone either better or bitter. If the struggles are too much, the person could just become overwhelmed and bitter, but alternatively, the struggles might make the person stronger/better for having experienced the struggles.

  12. I’ll say better as I believe that it’s made me a better person. But like others have said, bitter can also happen. Bitter is a much easier option.

  13. From my observation in people it makes people bitter and distance.

  14. It makes you better!

  15. It makes you better.

  16. Depending on the struggle. One may be bitter at first, but ultimately grow better and stronger.

  19. I think it makes a person better, they appreciate life and the things that come that are good

  23. I think it depends on the type of struggles. I have been through many in my life, and I have felt different ways depending on what I was going through. I learn from my mistakes and the mistakes of others, which I feel has made me a better person.

  24. I think life’s struggles can make you both better and bitter but it is up to you to decide how you want to live.

  25. It could go either way. If you learn from them, good. If you get bitter, worse. Thanks for the giveaway.

  26. I think that the further away you get from the situation the the better you feel about it and can see it more objectively. It is easy to be bitter at first though and think why me?

  27. A little bit of both. It really depends on the person and the struggles.

  28. It’s up to you, but I like to think that “everything that doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”.

  30. I definitely think it is what a person makes of it. I have grown and learned from my early struggles. My sibling has grown bitter and given up. Similar experiences leading to different outcomes.

  31. I guess it depends on the person. Some people are able to overcome their struggles and are better for it while others become bitter.

  32. it’s up to you, to become better or bitter!

  35. I think some people will be bitter, and some will be better. It depends entirely on the perosn.

  36. You have to hold faith in your heart and remember God’s plan for you might not be your plan for yourself.

  37. I think it’s within us to decide if it’s going to make us better or bitter. Some people take the upper hand while others decide they’d rather let it get the best of them.

  38. I think that most of the time life’s struggles makes us a better and stronger
person. It makes us more compassionate to others

  39. Struggles always teach you a lesson, hopefully, and what you take from that depends on where you are in life. If you realize that not everything is about you, you become better. If you insist that the problems you face or those of others are all about you, you’ll be bitter. Struggle, learn, grow.

  40. I think it depends on the person and the situation. In some cases, better. In others, bitter.
