My Thoughts

I am a member of several book groups on Facebook and after seeing many positive reviews and comments on this book, I knew I had to read it.

Ten years ago, Katelyn MacDonald ran away from her life. After having a beautiful baby girl, Maisie, Katelyn suffered from Postpartum Depression and a severe case of “harm” OCD, which consumed her, she felt the only way to protect her daughter was to leave.

Ten years later, Katelyn has gotten her life in a somewhat better place. Known now as Katie Mack, she is an artist and has agreed to oversee a group of children at the Contemporary Art Museum. She soon discovers that one of the docents is Maisie. How can she continue after giving away her parental rights, but how can she not, being so close to her child. And what she sees, and believes is frightening. Could Maisie be suffering from the same illness? Will she be able to help her daughter?

Maisie was told that her birth mother died. Can her father, now remarried and with a new baby on the way and an Uncle who helped raise her, all come together to help Maisie? Will secrets come to light? Will promises be kept?

A heart wrenching and raw look at mental illness! Compelling!

The author gives a realistic insight into this illness. Her narrative of the internal dialogue and thought process of a person with OCD left me exhausted, with a new and sympathetic understanding of the disease.

A poignant and touching story! An emotional and dynamic read!

My Thoughts

He has done it again! Steven Manchester, as I have said in the past, is the master storyteller in matters of the heart. But this time, he raised the bar even higher.

THREE SHOEBOXES is a raw and emotional read, of a family that is dealing with P.T.S.D, depression, anxiety and severe panic attacks, and how it not only affects the person afflicted but those that love and care for him. A realistic look at the struggle and the power to overcome.

Mac Anderson, husband and father of 3, starts having intense episodes of anxiety but not sure why. These episodes begin to increase not only in severity but also in frequency until they are totally consuming him. As he turns inward, he starts to self-medicate, which results in angry outbursts, alienating his wife and children and jeopardizing his job. And to the lowest point of being arrested for domestic assault.

A story that will have you so frustrated with Mac one minute and rooting for him the next. A somber realism of the effects of mental illness that still holds a stigma today.

What’s in those THREE SHOEBOXES? You will have to read this exceptional novel to find out. But a warning, have the tissues close by.

An intense and compelling read of a serious disease and the triumph of faith, will, determination and love.

Having read many of Steven Manchester’s books, I truly believe his writing is like a fine wine. It only gets better with age.

My Thoughts

This novella was the first I have read by this author.

For me personally, I enjoy novellas to get acquainted with an author’s work, but it always seems I usually want more of the particular story.

Johnny Chapman has 2 addictions, gambling and alcohol. He also, being good looking and charismatic, can also be a “ladies man”. And he is down on his luck in all 3 departments.

He has been on a losing streak and can’t pay off his debts so the loan shark has a proposition for him. Rig a dog race by injecting the favorite to win with an injection of “hormones” before the race. But as the synopsis states, he can’t do it to this innocent animal and walks away. However, not a good idea, when he has to outrun those that he is indebted to. Thus begins the fight of his life to stay alive.

A fast paced journey of suspense with a bit of romance thrown in. As the story unfolds, the reader is taken on a wild ride of Chapman’s fear to survive and outsmart the tough guys. Even to the point of armed robbery and murder. But is it reality, dreams, and/or alcohol-induced visions? The reader will have to decide.

My Thoughts

Jacqueline, aka Jacks, gets the dreaded visit that everyone fears. Her husband has been killed in an auto accident. However, it didn’t happen where he was supposed to be on a business trip, but in Hawaii. And to make it worse, his passenger, another woman, also has died.

Not long after, the fiancé of the other woman, visits Jacks and asks that they both go to Hawaii to find answers to get some closure. As much as her family is against this, Jacks feels she needs to go. But can she handle the truth?

A captivating read that will have you on the edge of your seat. As each piece of information was revealed, I had to keep turning the pages to find out what the next one was.

Except, I wasn’t prepared for the last one!

A gripping read! And a chilling and breathtaking ending!

Am looking forward to reading their next book GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT!

Highly recommend if you enjoy psychological thrillers!

MY REVIEW

I told you on January 8th, when I posted my review of THE SWEDISH GIRL, that I am addicted to this series!!

THE SILENT GAMES is the 11th novel but easily reads as a stand alone.

I have one question for Alex Gray…..how does she do it? How does she write each book with so much suspense, so much plot, so much story? And if you were to ask me which book is my favorite so far, I’ll tell you at the end of my review!

DCI Bill Lorimer has a lot on his plate. He gets called for unexplained large explosion where The Commonwealth Games are to be held in a year, in the same area, an unidentified young girl is found murdered and he attends his 20 year High School reunion, organized by his first love, Vivien. Later that night, Vivien calls saying she needs him because she has just found her husband dead.

As the cases proceed, they get worse. The explosion may be a trial run for a terrorist attack, the murder of the young girl has a wide reach of sex trafficking and Vivienne’s husband has been murdered. Could this all be related? But how?

Ms. Gray has such a descriptive writing style that with this book, and all the others I have read, I am able to create such vivid imagery. Imagery that has stayed with me from her previous books. The characters are realistic. The suspense never faltered. I found myself getting frustrated because life kept interrupting my reading time as I did not want to put this book down! Non stop action! A dynamic read!

Now to answer the question, which book is my favorite so far….the one I just finished reading but then I thought the same thing when I finished reading THE SWEDISH GIRL, and again when I read FIVE WAYS TO KILL A MAN, etc. etc.. Alex Gray has delivered again with another thrilling read! Please Ms. Gray, keep them coming!!!

My Thoughts

A story that will keep you on the edge of your seat!!

As the synopsis states, Ethan and Sutton Montclair, noted authors, have a love/hate relationship and a marriage full of lies, betrayals, and secrets. After months of personal turmoil, Sutton leaves a note saying she is leaving and not to look for her. Ethan is beside himself, thinking that Sutton might hurt herself because she left behind her phone, laptop, passport, etc. After a couple of days, he notifies the authorities, and not long after that, a body is found. Is it Sutton? Did Ethan have something to do with her death?

This story had so many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. A chilling read! And the ending….WOW! Didn’t see that one coming!

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy psychological thrillers!

MY REVIEW

I have read 2 previous novels by this author, known for his legal thrillers, DEAD PEASANTS and THE INSANITY PLEA, and have been anxiously waiting for his latest book, WHITE WITCH, which has a bit of a different spin that I absolutely loved.

Will Taylor, VP of security for an international mining company, finds himself dealing with more than your average security. Set in the rainforests of Jamaica, the settlers and owners of the land will fight to keep the mining company out. Will soon finds out that there is much more going on. Is it pure legend or is there truth to the Voodoo stories associated with the land.

What could go wrong on this tropical island? Co-workers and officials are being murdered? Why and by who? Could ghosts of the past have something to do with the killings? And who’s side does Will align himself with when the owners of the land sue his employer?

This was an exceptional read!!!! Not only was the story intriguing, so was the history of Jamaica. The way the author weaves his legal expertise with the history of the island makes for a compelling read! This novel was well worth the wait! Fantastic!

Highly, highly recommend!!!

Author Bio:

After graduating from the University of Texas School of Law, Larry spent the first half of his professional life as a trial lawyer. He tried well over 300 cases and won more than 95% of them. Although he had not taken a writing class since freshman English (back when they wrote on stone tablets), he figured that he had read enough novels and knew enough about trials, lawyers, judges, and courtrooms that he could do it. My Thoughts

“The clock is ticking.” IMO, those words describe what type of read this was!

This is the 4th book in the series but easily read as a stand alone. I have read 2 of the previous novels, BLOND CARGO and DEAD IS DEAD, which were exceptional.

Jack Bertolino is back and taking the reader on another heart pounding, dangerous journey!

John Lansing has a way with the written word that is fluid and detailed so that the reader can create vivid imagery. For me, it was like watching a movie in my mind. The kind of book where I was transported into the story. The characters come to life. The settings well defined.

An exhilarating read from beginning to end! Riveting!
