Synopsis (via GR)

There is a stranger outside Caroline’s house.

Her spectacular new beach house, built for hosting expensive parties and vacationing with the family she thought she’d have. But her husband is lying to her and everything in her life is upside down, so when the stranger, Aiden, shows up as a bartender at the same party where Caroline and her husband have a very public fight, it doesn’t seem like anything out of the ordinary.

As her marriage collapses around her and the lavish lifestyle she’s built for herself starts to crumble, Caroline turns to Aiden for comfort…and revenge. After a brief and desperate fling that means nothing to Caroline and everything to him, Aiden’s obsession with Caroline, her family, and her house grows more and more disturbing. And when Caroline’s husband goes missing, her life descends into a nightmare that leaves her accused of her own husband’s murder.

My Thoughts

HOLY S#@T!!!! What a read!!!

I read IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND and became a fan of Ms. Campbell with that book. And after reading this book, can’t wait to read SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE, which is in my pile of TBRs. Ms. Campbell is now on my “authors to read” list and should be on your’s too.

While running on the beach in front of her new beachfront home in the Hamptons, Caroline Stark comes upon a young man staring at her house. Thinking he may be a burglar, she stops to ask who and what he is doing. His name is Aidan Callahan and this isn’t the first time that he has been there. He often stops to look at what used to be his grandfather’s land but the house that he knew is now an extraordinary dwelling.

Not long after this meeting, Aidan was hired by a caterer to bartend at an exclusive party that Caroline has planned. But things aren’t festive. Caroline’s husband shows up with a Russian woman and everyone is talking. Is her marriage over?

After the humiliation, Caroline goes to a local bar where Aidan works and after too many drinks, Caroline and Aidan end up at her house and a one night stand happens. However, Aidan thinks it more than that, he is in love. A love that becomes obsessive. To the point of murder?

The premise of the story was absolutely brilliant!! The narrative chilling as the reader sees the different perspectives of events as told by Aidan, Caroline, and her family.

You will be holding your breath one minute, gasping for air the next and finally picking your jaw off the floor!!!

A white knuckle read that was hard to put down!! A story that will stay with you long after you read the last word.

An exceptional Psychological Thriller. Pick up your copy asap but be prepared that you will need to read this one in one sitting!!!!

    Synopsis (via GR)

From the author of the page-turning domestic suspense Best Day Ever, comes another gripping novel of psychological suspense set in an upscale Southern California community, for fans of B.A. Paris and Shari Lapena.

The perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect lie.

Jane Harris lives in a sparkling home in an oceanfront gated community in Orange County. It’s a place that seems too beautiful to be touched by sadness. But exactly one year ago, Jane’s oldest daughter, Mary, died in a tragic accident and Jane has been grief-stricken ever since. Lost in a haze of anti-depressants, she’s barely even left the house. Now that’s all about to change.

It’s time for Jane to reclaim her life and her family. Jane’s husband, David, has planned a memorial service for Mary and three days later, their youngest daughter, Betsy, graduates high school. Yet as Jane reemerges into the world, it’s clear her family has changed without her. Her husband has been working long days—and nights—at the office. Her daughter seems distant, even secretive. And her beloved Mary was always such a good girl—dutiful and loving. But does someone know more about Mary, and about her last day, than they’ve revealed?

The bonds between mothers and daughters, and husbands and wives should never be broken. But you never know how far someone will go to keep a family together…

    My Thoughts

This will definitely be one of the books on 2019 Top Reads list.

This is the first book that I have read by this author but will be reading more work by her.

The narrative is written in the first person point of view of Jane Harris.

Jane had it all. A loving husband, two daughters, a beautiful house until that tragic day 1 year ago when her oldest daughter fell to her death. Since that time, Jane has been suffering from “complicated” depression, which has pulled her emotionally from her family.

But this week is big and she plans on making a comeback. The memorial for the celebration of her daughter and in days, her youngest daughter will be graduating High School. She has waited for this day and has BIG plans for the celebrations.

A bone chilling read! I didn’t know if I should have compassion for Jane or be afraid of her. Were her husband and living daughter just not understanding and compassionate towards her or were they the true victims?

Twists and turns galore! This book was riveting and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!

If you like psychological thrillers, you HAVE to read this one!!!

    Synopsis (via GR)

A mother’s chance decision leads to a twist of fate that is every parent’s worst nightmare.

Claire Rawlings, mother of two and medical resident, will not let the troubling signs of an allergic reaction prevent her from making it in for rounds. But when Claire’s symptoms overpower her while she’s driving into work, her two children in tow, she must pull over. Moments later she wakes up on the floor of a gas station bathroom-her car, and her precious girls have vanished.

The police have no leads and the weight of guilt presses down on Claire as each hour passes with no trace of her girls. All she has to hold on to are her strained marriage, a potentially unreliable witness who emerges days later, and the desperate but unquenchable belief that her daughters are out there somewhere.

Little Lovely Things is the story of a family shattered by an unthinkable tragedy. Played out in multiple narrative voices, the novel explores how the lives of those affected fatefully intersect, and highlights the potential catastrophe of the small decisions we make every day.

    My Thoughts

    An incredible debut novel!!!

I had seen many positive comments on this book and knew I had to see what all the buzz was about. Did it live up to those rave reviews?

It’s 1991 and Dr. Claire Rawlings, on her way to work, with her 2 daughters in the back seat, is having a severe allergic reaction to a vaccine she received and has no choice but to stop due to her severe symptoms. After passing out in a gas station’s bathroom, she comes to but realizes that her car has been stolen with the 2 girls inside.

With feelings of extreme guilt, Claire and her husband Glen, try getting through each day in the hopes that their children will be returned.

The writing was fluid and so descriptive that I was pulled in from the first page. The type of book that had me so engrossed that I became one with the story. At times, the suspense was so taut that I found myself holding my breath. I could create vivid imagery of both the characters and scenes and feel the emotions of each member of the cast from the amazing descriptive narrative.

Was all the buzz about this book correct? Absolutely and then some!!! Putting this author on my radar!

A book that was hard to put down!!! Compelling and captivating that left me breathless! A story that will stay with me for a very long time!

    Synopsis (via GR)

In the vein of Big Little Lies and Reconstructing Amelia comes an emotionally charged domestic suspense novel about a mother unraveling the truth behind how her daughter became brain dead. And pregnant.

A search for the truth. A lifetime of lies.

In the small hours of the morning, Abi Knight is startled awake by the phone call no mother ever wants to get: her teenage daughter Olivia has fallen off a bridge. Not only is Olivia brain dead, she’s pregnant and must remain on life support to keep her baby alive. And then Abi sees the angry bruises circling Olivia’s wrists.

When the police unexpectedly rule Olivia’s fall an accident, Abi decides to find out what really happened that night. Heartbroken and grieving, she unravels the threads of her daughter’s life. Was Olivia’s fall an accident? Or something far more sinister?

Christina McDonald weaves a suspenseful and heartwrenching tale of hidden relationships, devastating lies, and the power of a mother’s love. With flashbacks of Olivia’s own resolve to uncover family secrets, this taut and emotional novel asks: how well do you know your children? And how well do they know you?

    My Thoughts

I belong to a few FB groups for book lovers and after seeing so many great things said about this book, I had to read it and see what the buzz was all about. And for those that recommended it, a BIG thank you!

This doesn’t happen often with me but this book was SO good that I read it in one day!

Abi Knight gets the phone call that every mother fears. There has been an accident and her daughter Olivia is at the hospital. How could this be? Abi, who is a single parent has taken every precaution to safeguard her daughter’s well being, some would even say including Olivia, to the point of being overprotective.

When Abi gets to the hospital, her nightmare begins. Not only is Olivia brain dead but she is also pregnant. Can’t be!! Olivia is a good student, has many friends, and never drank nor did drugs. And in Washington, life support can’t be turned off when a woman is pregnant.

The police aren’t investigating because they have ruled Olivia falling to her death at the ZigZag Bridge to be a tragic accident. But Abi notices that Olivia has bruises on her wrist that resemble finger marks. She doesn’t accept this as an accident but foul play and she needs to find out the truth.

The story alternates from 6 months prior to the accident and to the present day.

Not only was this a suspenseful read from beginning to end, it was also very emotional. The author’s writing style will have you feeling every emotion that Abi is dealing with. I thought I had it all figured out when I was 1/3 into the book, but not even close! I could not put this book down!

Love, lies, betrayals, secrets, pain, guilt and a mother’s need to know to be able to say goodbye.

    A captivating read!!

    Synopsis (via GR)

Forgive and forget? The past and present collide for two sisters who survived a tragedy—and must now survive the truth behind it.

It’s been twenty years since Cara’s boyfriend died in a horrible accident and her sister, Anna, went to prison. The tragedy has become a local legend, but Cara has moved past her grief to have a successful career and a happy family. Pity about Anna. Recently released from incarceration, she’s struggling with addiction, guilt, and shame—a shattered life. Cara’s forgiveness seems to be the only thing that helps her pick up the pieces.

But as Anna pulls herself together, her memories of that night on the bridge start to come into focus. And few of them match her sister’s.

As past secrets unfold and nothing is what it seems anymore, Anna desperately searches for the truth. But what if Cara doesn’t want her to find it?

    My Thoughts

This is the first book that I have read by this author but I know I will be reading more by her in the future.

Cara Piper Stanley has always been a fixer. But can she fix her younger sister Anna from herself?

Since their young years growing up in Rapid Falls, there has always been jealousy, resentment, sibling rivalry, and what seemed like a love/hate relationship between the two. Cara always felt that Anna was the favorite daughter.

June 6, 1997, was supposed to be the best day in Cara’s life when her boyfriend, the love of her life, attended their prom and graduation party, a tradition in small town Rapid Falls where everyone knows each other. Even though Anna was 1 year younger than Cara, she would be attending the celebration and was the designated driver for the night. But it didn’t end well. Anna, behind the wheel, and under the influence, there was a horrific car accident, which took the life of Jesse, Cara’s boyfriend and soon to be fiancé.

Anna was charged in the death and spent 3 years in prison. Upon her release, her life spiraled downward and became an alcoholic, abused drugs and tried committing suicide 3 times. Cara was always there to pick her up. Anna can’t recall what happened that tragic night, but Cara knows and she holds the secret.

I have been on a psychological thriller reads binge and this one definitely fits that category. I enjoyed the author’s writing style, the twisted turns of the story, the craving to find out what the secret was and the characters, even though some of them I did not like for reasons that I won’t mention to avoid any spoiler.

An exciting read that had me turning the pages, which I’m sure you will too, which I highly recommend!

    Synopsis (via GR)

A seemingly perfect marriage is threatened by the deadly secrets husband and wife keep from each other, for fans of B.A. Paris and Paula Hawkins.

Susannah, a young widow and single mother, has remarried well: to Max, a charismatic artist and popular speaker whose career took her and her fifteen-year-old son out of New York City and to a quiet Vermont university town. Strong-willed and attractive, Susannah expects that her life is perfectly in place again. Then one quiet morning she finds a note on her door: I KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

Max dismisses the note as a prank. But days after a neighborhood couple comes to dinner, the husband mysteriously dies in a tragic accident while on a run with Max. Soon thereafter, a second note appears on their door: DID YOU GET AWAY WITH IT?

Both Susannah and Max are keeping secrets from the world and from each other —secrets that could destroy their family and everything they have built. The Perfect Liar is a thrilling novel told through the alternating perspectives of Susannah and Max with a shocking climax that no one will expect, from the bestselling author of The Headmaster’s Wife.

    My Thoughts

Susannah and her son Freddy have been on their own for 16 years after her husband Joseph passed away. And then she met Max “W” at a party that Susannah’s boss was hosting for the art community. Not long after, Max proposed on the very spot that they first met.

They had the perfect life, or at least that’s what it appeared to be. Max’s notoriety soared in the art world, after traveling to give his talk on “You Are The Art”. He was sought after and was then offered an academician appointment at a Vermont College. Three years after settling down in Vermont, the cryptic notes started showing up on their front door.

The first note read I KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Two notes would follow.

But who were these notes intended for since both Susannah and Max had deep buried secrets that neither one of them knew about?

The story was captivating from the start. However, at approximately 30-50% of the story, I found it dragged some. But after that, the suspense and action picked up and at that point, I was frantically turning the pages.

I did figure out who the letters were intended for, but not who wrote them nor the why for the motive. It all came together in a climatic ending.

Another psychological thriller that you should read!!

    Synopsis (via GR)

When Ella wakes up in a hospital following a hit-and-run incident, she is scared and confused. Close to tears, her eyes fall on a get-well-soon card on the window sill and the nurse reassures her that her loving husband will be back soon…

But Ella has never been married.

In fact, she has lived alone her whole adult life; working hard, rarely socialising, quietly harbouring a terrible secret from her past.

Fear sweeps through Ella when she instantly recognises the man who enters the ward. He is not her husband, but she knows that she must do as he says and play the part of dutiful wife.

What choice does she have? He was there the night of the fire, he knows her secret too…

    My Thoughts

This book sure packed a wallop!!!!

Ella Sinclair has a strict routine, work, home sleep, work home, sleep. That is until she wakes up in the hospital after being hit by a van as she was riding her bike home after work. But something is drastically wrong. The nurse informs Ella that her husband has been by her side since she was admitted. The problem is that Ella is not married.

For the past 10 years, Ella has kept to herself. She doesn’t share anything about her personal life nor does she interact with her co-workers socially as she is hiding from her past. That is until she opens her eyes at the hospital and sees that her past has caught up with her.

A thrilling and chilling read from the Prologue to the last word!! A white knuckle experience! The story alternates between the present and what happened 10 years ago. The ending was mind blowing, which I did not see coming. I don’t think I have ever hated a character as much as I did with Jacob.

This is the first book that I have read by this author, however, it won’t be my last. I am putting Ms. Hayes on my “authors to read” list.

If you like psychological thrillers, then I highly recommend this book.

    Synopsis (via GR)

In the most explosive and twisted psychological thriller since The Woman in the Window, a beautiful marriage turns beautifully bad.

Things that make me scared: When Charlie cries. Hospitals and lakes. When Ian drinks vodka in the basement. ISIS. When Ian gets angry… That something is really, really wrong with me.

Maddie and Ian’s romance began with a chance encounter at a party overseas; he was serving in the British army and she was a travel writer visiting her best friend, Jo. Now almost two decades later, married with a beautiful son, Charlie, they are living the perfect suburban life in Middle America. But when a camping accident leaves Maddie badly scarred, she begins attending writing therapy, where she gradually reveals her fears about Ian’s PTSD; her concerns for the safety of their young son, Charlie; and the couple’s tangled and tumultuous past with Jo.

From the Balkans to England, Iraq to Manhattan, and finally to an ordinary family home in Kansas, sixteen years of love and fear, adventure and suspicion culminate in The Day of the Killing, when a frantic 911 call summons the police to the scene of a shocking crime.

    My Thoughts

WOW! This was one heck of a jaw dropper!

An intense, complex and twisted story with a cast of characters that are equally complex and filled with flaws.

The story takes place in 3 main time frames, the past, present and 10 days before the killing, 9 days, etc. With that being said, and not wanting to give away even the slightest spoiler, I kept turning the pages since I wanted to know who the victim was and the possible suspect. However, there was even more that was chilling, and that was the motive.

A story that will have your heart pounding and shaking your head! It will grab you from the first page and suspenseful to the last word!

If you enjoy psychological thrillers, then this one is for you.
