This week’s question:
The news has been horrifying and addictive this week, with catastrophe piled on catastrophe, to a degree that–if I had read this in a book or seen it in a movie–I’d be protesting that it was just too unlikely, too farfetched.

But, topics for novels get ripped from the headlines all the time. Or real-life events remind you of fiction (whether “believable” or not) that you’ve read but never expected to see. Or real life comes up with an event so unbelievable that it stretches you sense of reality.
Hmm … I can’t quite come up with an outright question to ask, but thinking about the theory of fiction and how it can affect and be affected by real world events can act as a buffer between the horrific events on the news and having to actually face that horror. So … what happens when the line between fiction and reality becomes all-too slim? Discuss!
My answer:
I touched upon this very subject in one of my Saturday memes.  A couple of years ago I read The Left Behind Series, which was written in the late 90s by 2 Pastors, a fictional story based on The Revelations of The Bible.  It is a series of 13 books, a series that I could not put down and read in a matter of a few weeks.  Due to my religious beliefs, what is happening and has been happening in real life, does not surprise me.  All of this was in those books along with a lot of other incidents that have happened.  And again, you have to remember, these books were based on The Bible and written in the late 90s.  Whenever asked what is your “favorite book/series”, my answer has always been The Left Behind Series.

From Lori’s site:
It struck me recently how much time I spend on this computer every day, blogging, chatting or playing games on Facebook, emailing friends and relatives, making cards and calendars, etc. etc. etc.
We depend on each other for book reviews, giveaways, encouragement, friendship, but how well do we really know each other?
So that is what this meme is all about, getting to know each other.

1. What is your family background regarding nationality?
100% Italian

2. Have you ever eaten corned beef and cabbage, the traditionally meal of St. Patrick’s Day or drank green colored beer?
Yes

3. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many cities in the U.S. and around the world, are there any celebrations happening near you?
Probably but not sure.

This week’s question:
Do you multi-task when you read? Do other things like stirring things on the stove, brushing your teeth, watching television, knitting, walking, et cetera?
Or is it just me, and you sit and do nothing but focus on what you’re reading?
(Or, if you do both, why, when, and which do you prefer?)
My answer:
Me….. Multitask?  Is this a trick question? I’m lucky that I can read and turn the pages at the same time lol.
Seriously, the only thing I can do is have the TV on, tuned to a cable news station with the volume low and if I am so engrossed into the story, I don’t even realize it is on.

1. Author Jessica Park commented this week on Facebook that “Naming characters takes me almost as long as it does to write the book.” which led me to start thinking about names. Is there a story behind your first name?
Not really.  Only that the first letter of my name is the first letter of my mother’s.  And my sister’s first letter is the same as it was for my father.

2. Do you think parents today give more thought to the names they give their children than our parents did?
Interesting question.  Really not sure of the answer but if I had to guess I would say parents today give more thought in naming their children.

3. What is the most unusual child’s name you have noticed recently?
The person I am thinking of is not a child but a local news reporter and I never can pronounce it and hope I come close to spelling it.  It’s Nnewka

This week’s question:
Do you cheat and peek at the ends of books? (Come on, be honest.)

My answer:
Honestly…..No…Not Now!!!    I read purely for pleasure and entertainment so I don’t understand what purpose peeking would have.  But as I’m sitting here thinking about this question, there may have been times, while in school many years ago, that I skimmed through the body and peeked at the ending of a mandatory book that was of no interest to me.

1. How many cookbooks do you own?
I own 7+ but my favorite is a spiral notebook filled
with my grandmother’s recipes written in her handwriting,
she passed away at 101 years old and was such a
great cook and baker, everything from scratch
2. What is the most used electrical appliance in your kitchen?
3. How many nights per week do you have take-out, delivery or fast food?
Unfortunately, more times than I cook.  It is
difficult for me to stand, bend, etc etc due to
the restrictions/limitations from the surgery.  I
am lucky that I have an understanding hubby.

This week’s question:
All other things being equal–do you prefer used books? Or new books? (The physical speciman, that is, not the title.) Does your preference differentiate between a standard kind of used book, and a pristine, leather-bound copy?
My Answer:
Definitely new books.  I love the smell of opening a new book for the first time with the spine of the book not bent and turning a crisp page to the very end of the book.  And I will only purchase a used book if it is in good condition.
