SOMETHING TO PROVE
A Daughter’s Journey to Fulfill a Father’s Legacy

by YVONNE S. THORNTON, M.D., MPH
with Anita Bartholomew
January 8th to January 22nd
SYNOPSIS (borrowed from B&N):
The inspiring sequel to the acclaimed memoir The Ditchdigger’s Daughters.

Dr. Yvonne Thornton’s memoir The Ditchdigger’s Daughters has captured the hearts of readers everywhere since it was first published in 1995. Translated into 19 languages, featured on Oprah, and made into a TV movie, this heart-warming and inspiring story chronicles Yvonne Thornton’s family; at its center is her beloved, unschooled but wise father Donald Thornton, who demanded that all five of his daughters not only excel in school, but go on to become doctors. Four of them did; the other found her calling in law and became a lawyer instead.
Something to Prove picks up where The Ditchdigger’s Daughters left off. In this sequel, Dr. Thornton reveals how she ascended to the top of her field as a physician by drawing on her father’s teachings. Despite bias and setbacks, she became the first African-American woman to be board certified in the obstetrical sub-specialty of maternal-fetal medicine. Dismissed and shunned by her peers for entering the white, male-dominated world of academic medicine, Dr. Thornton relied on her father’s life lessons, which taught her to be strong and rise above adversity. Though intelligence, determination, and hard work, Dr. Yvonne Thornton overcame the odds to reach the pinnacle of her profession.

Hosted by Danielle at There’s A Book

From Danielle’s blog:
We all leave our “footprint” on the world, in one way or another. We each, individually, do something or are someone that makes the world a little better just by being here. I created this weekly meme to get to know the blogging community I love just a bit better. To know what makes them tick, outside of books, that is. Each week I will post a question to be answered in the following week’s “A Bit of Me(Me)”. Check back each Saturday to get the info for next week’s post and link up with your current post right here.
This week’s question: What’s your most looked forward to event coming up this year? (Online or real life, bookwise or not, anything.)

First let me say Thank You Danielle!!!!  She usually asks for a favorite food and being Italian, there is no such thing as favorite when it comes to food  lol.  So this one is an easy question for me.  I am sure, that they will get harder as the year progresses.
I have 2 things.  Bookwise is that I complete ALL of my 15 Challenges I signed up for.  Yes, I know, I am a Challenge Addict and proud of it.

Photobucket
I think I figured out part of my problem, not only do I love the concept, but I absolutely adore the buttons that the bloggers design.
And the second one is what I got for Christmas.  A trip to Aruba!!!!!  We have been before so I know what to expect.  Plus we will be celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary.  This is the actual place where we will be staying, The Radisson Resort.
And the plan is to be on the beach everyday, reading, soaking up the sun, with a frozen pina colada or 2 or maybe even 3!!.  Not sure what the hubby will be doing  lol.  But that’s where he can find me!!!

This Week’s Question:
“What book influenced or changed your life? How did it influence/change you?”

I have to say the Bible.  When going through a rough time, I just open it to a random page, and there is always a passage relating to what I am experiencing and what I need to do.

Any New Year’s reading resolutions?
I did make reading resolutions for 2011, and yes, I have already broken one of them.  In 2010, I accepted so many requests from the time my blog went public in December, that I never picked up a book from my personal tbr list.  I, really thought that requests would be far and few between, and was I wrong!  I wrote my “Review Policy” (due to the far and few between thinking) stating that I would read the requested reviews in order of receiving them, which almost made me into a robot reader.  This year I have amended my “Review Policy” as to guaranteeing 3-4 ARCs per month and then continue with my request pile until completed.  I think that is why I went into such a huge slump in September.
I also planned not to accept so many books  LMAO….ok…so that one went out the window.  With so many good books out there, how can 1 say NO.  Plus how can you say no to an author who has taken the time to contact you, which I take as an honor, is trying so hard to get their book recognized after putting their heart and soul into writing it and now trying to market it.  This just might be the next #1 Best Seller.  And if the synopsis sounds good, I want to give that author a chance!!!

What about you?  Any resolutions?

Hosted by Lori from Dollycas’s Thoughts From Lori’s site:
It struck me recently how much time I spend on this computer every day, blogging, chatting or playing games on Facebook, emailing friends and relatives, making cards and calendars, etc. etc. etc.
We depend on each other for book reviews, giveaways, encouragement, friendship, but how well do we really know each other?
So that is what this meme is all about, getting to know each other.
WEEK 19 QUESTIONS
After Lori suffered from the flu for a few days,
her questions are all about food!
Hope you are feeling better and back to normal!!
1. How would you build the perfect sandwich?
It would start with Kraft mayo on both sides, lettuce and tomato.  And for the main course either egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, roast beef or ham.  And has to have a couple of pickles on the side.
2. What is your favorite flavor of potato chips?
3. Now add the perfect beverage to complete this lunch.
